Lab Hours: Kierah

These lab hours weren't much different from my last lab hours sadly. I was still stuck with no inspiration for Gwnedolyn's outfit. Things either didnt fit, weren't long enough, were too dark, or didnt fit the period's fashion. After about 3 hours of having Camille try things on and making a mess of the closet, I found something I was partially satisfied with.

There were flapper like dresses up in the closet of many different colors of pink and I chose the one that wasn't a pink really at all and had sheer dangly pieces. Gwendolyn is a fashionista, and the fashion of the time was sleek and chic opposite to the big, ruffly, lacey, puffy Victorian age. We found a plain white skirt that was long enough for her and looked well with the color of the top. stuffing the sheer pieces, inside the skirt, we found something around the 1918 fashion. There were only a few problems with the top. For some reason, it really loved showing her bra line and the back bunched up in an unflattering way, but by then we were both tired and hungry and didn't wan to do anymore with clothes, so we hung up the pieces and went home

   

During the beginning part of my lab hours, I also checked on the glasses i glued on an old feather piece during class. I lifted them up to show Ingrid and POP! they drop off the stick. I tried resticking them on, twisting them with wire (which was hard with the thickness of the wire), and Ingrid tried sticking them inside the feather pipe, but nothing would work. The glasses wouldnt sit right or sit still as i twisted the wire around it.

Overall, these lab hours frustrated me. Everything I worked on ended up not working or being redone with something else. I also feel bad that Sister Dooley is having to pick up my slack and making the over coats for my character... The first dress rehersal is Monday, and I don't feel like I've done anything to prepare my character for the stage.

Lab Hours

I can't believe we have such a short amount of time to get the costumes ready for Earnest! I decided to focus on Gwendolen Fairfax because she is a fashionable lady and I thought it would be a fun character to dress. However, I'm having a hard time find something that works. The fashion of 1918 is not quite Edwardian, but not quite 20's. It's like  the awkward adolescence period of fashion. It's not sure what it is, and i'm not sure either or how to use what we have to do something 1918's. Sometimes i wish I had a time machine to just go back and buy something from a store. The first dresses I grabbed weren't going to work because one was a wine red which is another character's color and the other one was too dark (even though it is a fabulous dress). So during my second lab hour time I went back to the closet and grabbed anything and everything I though would work and fit my actor. I also happened to bump into Camille and we scheduled for another fitting to try on those other options.

Lab hours

These lab hours were a lot more productive in my opinion. At first I didn't want to touch or think about the sweeper caps because of a recent frustration with the pattern so I worked on smaller things. Alpha asked me to work on Katie Nana's hat by adding a black ribbon around to cover up the sky blue part. That took me an hour to do which I find strange. I always seem to take my time with handstitching things. I then worked on making the hat look more Edwardian. originally, the hat had a down curve to it making it a sun hat/ With Alpha's help and creative mind, I stitched it down in a couple of places and gave the brim a wavy shape and dispelling the sun hat look! For the last hour of my lab work, Sister Dooley gave me a new hat pattern which had much better instructions to it than the one I found. I was able to make two hats but there is still a little bit of work needed to be done on them but it wont be too earth shatter if it isn't done

Lab Hours

These lab hours were rather frustrating. I tried making another top cap but something was off and the pieces werent fitting together like they should. Sooooo I went "nope" . I finished added lace to Tori's park stroller skirt so it would reach her ankles. Once I finished that i went to the board to find something to do. Most of the things were pretty unclear and I didnt' feel right working on them when someone else knows more than I do what needed to be done. So decided to go exploring and find pieces for different people. I found coats for mr. and mrs. Banks and found several hats for other characters (see pic of me working a black hat with my new haircut with a derp face). Even though I didn't feel like i was doing much, I'm pretty sure that my exploring the closet for those small pieces did actually help.

Making Magic

I know this is late, but I forgot about this assignment!!

Anyway, for my lab hours I worked on a skirt for Miss Lark, and in doing so almost destroyed the sewing machine (oops) but it was fixed (I think)! Overall I love this outfit that I primarily got to design. The contrasts between the white with black accents (like ruffles and polka dots!!!), along with the pop of orange make this a very fun costume!

I also got to help make the neck scarves the chimney sweeps will wear. That was interesting, ok well, a little boring. Cutting fabric is only so-so on the excitement level.

I got to costume an actor who played sweep/customer/park stroller. That was a lot of work, but it was really fun! (Aside from spending so much time in the costume room. Don't get me wrong, it's an exciting place, but when you're in there too long you forget what fresh air actually is).

And I got to help the constable find a coat!!

Overall, it was pretty good! I tried to post some pictures with this, but every time I tried there would be some sort of error, and it would fail to upload. Sorry about the technical difficulty, maybe next time it will work!

Lab Hours

Surprisingly, I took two hours to finish one hat. Then again, this was my first time making the hat all the way through other than just doing the first steps and putting it on an already made hat. It took me awhile to remember how to sew the top of the hat to the curve. The instructions on the website were very vague and incomplete when it came to sewing the bias tape (or hem tape) to the inside and the top stitching. The pictures didn't help either because the only showed one side and not the front or the top. I had a small trial and error period which took a lot of the time. And at the very end the tutorial mentioned using a ribbon to finish the hem and that was confusing (that's all it said, nothing else). I made it work though. Not bad for the first hat, a big large and might need small ribbon hoops sewn in so bobby pins can hold the hat down to the head. I also need to make the brim bigger next time and use dark thread now that I am familiar with the process of the hat
